Grasses are usually easy to grow in a sunny garden. One tip that usually helps however is to cut them back in early Spring instead of Fall. Most varieties are near the northern edge of their hardiness here. Leaving the foliage for the winter helps to insulate the roots during cold spells.
After a few years fo some varieties the middle of the plant dies out. When this happens just dig out a piece from the edge and replant it in the middle while removing the rest.

Adagio Maiden Grass, Morning Light Maiden Grass, Hameln Fountain Grass, and Feather Reed Grass. For shay spots try Japanese Forest Grass or Northern Sea Oats.
