Soil Improvements
If you have decent soil it isn’t always necessary to add soil amendments but there are times when it is very important. If your soil is sandy or gravelly it pays to add organic matter. Compost or a mix of topsoil and manure will help. For clay soils the need is greater. Dig an extra large hole and add a rich topsoil. It is best to blend amendments with the existing soil.
Peat moss is often detrimental. It has no nutritional value and acts like a sponge. It expands and contacts so much that the plant gets moved around and struggles to take root.
B1 is good for root development in new plantings and can be found at some garden centers.
